AMRU DEVI

Amru Devi is a brilliant illustration of tenacity and fortitude. She encountered the cultural obstacles that many women in her society faced when she was born in Barmer, Rajasthan, in 1991. Her spirit, however, was unwavering. Following the custom of being married at the age of 18, Amru Devi pursued her education alongside her husband. She is among the community’s few proud bachelor’s degree holders.

Amru Devi had to give up her aspirations to pursue further education because of

financial concerns. She seized the chance to work and support her family financially, determined not to give up. Under Ruma Devi’s tutelage, she pursued needlework instruction, and with each deft stitch, Amru Devi emerged as a crucial support system for both her own family and the development of GVCS. Amru Devi’s unwavering perseverance paid off. Her sacrifice allowed her spouse to finish his education and finally land a government job. Amru Devi’s career flourished as well, bringing her to high-profile fashion events and even earning her a memorable spot on Kaun Banega Crorepati, where she and Ruma Devi proudly represented GVCS. She now skilfully runs her home, pursues her vocation, and makes sure her two sons get a top-notch education. Her narrative serves as a monument to the strength of tenacity and the ability of one individual to significantly alter their family and community.

MANI DEVI

Mani Devi was a key figure in the founding of Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan (GVCS), having been one of the original members of the self-help group that started the organisation. Her family’s only source of money at the time came from her skill in hand embroidery and applique work. Electricity and transit were luxury items in the early days of GVCS, but Mani Devi was no stranger to adversity. Mani Devi was accustomed to creating her own destiny because she was raised without

18. She managed to walk ten kilometres to obtain supplies and then return to offer her beautiful creations. She remembers with pleasure the day Ruma Devi installed solar lights to guarantee the comfort of the ladies at GVCS, allowing them to work into the night after finishing their housework. Mani Devi now enjoys the happiness of a changed life, with her job expanding and her children having the best education and limitless possibilities. The finest part is that she is aware that this was made possible by her own fortitude and independence.
